Indian actress and content creator Barkha Singh recently took to Instagram to share a comprehensive vegetarian food guide from her visit to Nishiki Market in Kyoto, Japan. Known as “Kyoto’s kitchen,” the popular food destination offers numerous vegetarian options that Singh documented in her detailed post.
Singh’s Instagram post included a 20-slide carousel featuring her culinary adventures through the famous market. “You MUST go to Nishiki (also known as Kyoto’s kitchen – don’t worry it offers great vegetarian options) to get acquainted with Japanese cuisine and take back spices, souvenirs, etc.,” she wrote, encouraging her followers to save her recommendations for their future trips to Japan.
Among her top vegetarian picks at the market, Singh highlighted several standout food stalls and restaurants. She recommended Konnamonjya Nishiki, where she enjoyed vegetable croquettes and soy doughnuts. Another favorite was Kyoto Spice, where visitors can purchase various Japanese spice blends and seasonings.
Singh’s food exploration didn’t stop there. She documented her visit to Nobu Nishiki, a tempura and Japanese omelette restaurant, where she watched the fascinating process of making Japanese rolled omelettes. Her post shows the detailed preparation technique for these traditional egg dishes. The actress also recommended trying sake at a specialized stall. “You must try the Sakura (cherry blossom) #sake here!” she noted in her post.
For tempura lovers, Singh showcased the “super light and crispy” mixed vegetable tempura available at the market. Her food journey continued with freshly made custard-filled pancakes from Nishiki Ichiha, which she described as being “to die for.” She also indulged in strawberry and Japanese red bean paste mochi.
For dinner options, Singh recommended Ramen Engine, suggesting visitors arrive early around 6:00 or 6:30 PM to avoid long wait times. She enjoyed ramen and miso rice at this popular establishment.
Singh’s comprehensive guide extended beyond just food. She highlighted traditional Japanese hair sticks that “secure hair a LOT more tightly than I expected!” The post also showed various pickled vegetables available at the market and featured roasted chestnuts as another must-try item.
The actress mentioned visiting the Onitsuka Tiger store, noting it was “the only one in Kyoto” and showing the “absolute chaos” at the popular shop. She cleverly captioned a photo of herself at the store with “I am Onit-Sukhi,” playing on the brand name.
This post appears to be part of a larger travel series from Singh’s trip to Japan. In a previous post, she encouraged followers to “Stay tuned and follow for some AWESOME #Japan photos and videos where I’m going to share some pro tips.” She also emphasized that cherry blossoms in Japan are “not overrated,” sharing beautiful photos of the iconic flowers.
For travelers planning a trip to Japan, Singh’s detailed guide offers valuable insights for vegetarians who might otherwise be concerned about finding suitable food options in a country known for its seafood and meat dishes.
