Actor Jim Sarbh has announced that his film “साबर बोंडं” (Sabar Bonda/Cactus Pears) is set to premiere at three prestigious international film festivals, marking a significant milestone in the independent film’s global journey.
International Festival Circuit Success
According to an Instagram announcement, the film will make its Los Angeles premiere at the 23rd Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA). The festival is known for showcasing groundbreaking independent cinema from South Asia and its diasporas, while also providing emerging storytellers with industry mentorship and networking opportunities.
In addition to its American debut, “Sabar Bonda” will have its Ukraine premiere at the Sunny Bunny Film Festival, where it will compete in the official selection. Sunny Bunny holds the distinction of being Ukraine’s first LGBTQ Film Festival, representing international queer filmmaking with a special focus on Ukrainian films. The festival addresses topical issues in both global and national contexts while serving as a powerful artistic and socio-political voice for the LGBTQ community.
The film will complete its festival hat trick with a Belgian premiere at the MOOOV Film Festival, where it will also compete for recognition. MOOOV brings international cinema to six locations across Flanders from April 24 to May 4, offering audiences a diverse range of films from around the world.
While specific details about the film’s plot remain limited from the announcement, “Sabar Bonda” appears to be an independent production with the alternative English title “Cactus Pears.” The announcement indicates tickets for all three festival screenings are currently on sale, with interested viewers directed to visit the respective festival websites for more information.
Jim Sarbh’s Rising Profile
This international recognition comes at a time when Sarbh continues to build his reputation as one of India’s most versatile actors. The 36-year-old performer, who began his career in theater before transitioning to film and television, has garnered acclaim for his performances in productions like “Neerja” (2016), “Padmaavat” (2018), and the Amazon Prime series “Made in Heaven.”
Born in Mumbai to a Parsi family, Sarbh spent his early years in Australia before returning to India. After studying at the American School of Bombay, he earned his psychology degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. His theatrical background includes work with the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta and Mumbai’s Alyque Padamsee.
Beyond “Sabar Bonda,” Sarbh has maintained a diverse creative presence. Recently, he participated in a theatrical reading of “Oganga,” a play written by renowned physician Dr. Farokh E. Udwadia as a tribute to his mentor, Dr. Albert Schweitzer.
His commitment to environmental causes was also highlighted when Wildlife SOS named a rescued sloth bear cub “Jimmy” in honor of the actor and his father, Jimmy Homi Sarbh, recognizing their support for wildlife conservation efforts.
On the professional front, Sarbh continues to receive praise for his performance as Adil Khanna in “Made in Heaven.” During an appearance on The Suvir Saran Show, he revealed that he found the script “brilliant” and accepted the role immediately, though interestingly mentioned he was initially more drawn to Arjun Mathur’s character.
The international festival circuit recognition for “Sabar Bonda” represents another significant step in Sarbh’s evolving career as he continues to balance mainstream projects with independent cinema that explores diverse themes and perspectives.
