John Abraham has announced that his debut production venture, ‘Vicky Donor,’ is set to return to theaters on April 18. The actor-producer shared the news on Instagram, expressing pride in the film that broke boundaries and introduced audiences to fresh talent.
“My debut film as a producer is back on the big screen this weekend—April 18th! A bold, ahead-of-its-time story with a message that still hits home,” John wrote in his Instagram post, accompanying a poster of the film featuring Ayushmann Khurrana. The 2012 comedy drama, which addressed the then-taboo subject of sperm donation with humor and sensitivity, was considered revolutionary for Indian cinema at the time. The film marked not only John’s first venture as a producer but also launched the acting career of Ayushmann Khurrana, who has since become one of Bollywood’s most versatile performers.
In his announcement, Abraham acknowledged the team that brought the film to life: “I was lucky to collaborate with the amazing Shoojit Sircar, Juhi Chaturvedi, Anu Kapoor, and our incredible discoveries—Ayushmann Khurrana and the ever-wonderful Yami Gautam.” Directed by Shoojit Sircar with a script by Juhi Chaturvedi, ‘Vicky Donor’ was praised for its fresh storytelling approach and memorable performances, particularly from veteran actor Annu Kapoor, who played the role of Dr. Baldev Chaddha, a fertility specialist. The film was produced under John’s production banner, JA Entertainment, which he established to create content-driven cinema that pushes boundaries while entertaining audiences.
Beyond its comedic elements, the film tackled important themes of infertility, adoption, and cultural differences between communities. John described it as a “jaw-dropping comedy with a large heart,” highlighting the film’s balance between entertainment and social messaging. ‘Vicky Donor’ was both a critical and commercial success upon its initial release, winning several accolades including three National Film Awards for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, Best Supporting Actor for Annu Kapoor, and Best Supporting Actress for Dolly Ahluwalia.
The announcement of ‘Vicky Donor’s’ re-release comes as the film industry increasingly looks to bring successful films back to theaters, allowing new audiences to experience them on the big screen and giving older fans a chance to revisit favorites in a theatrical setting.
