R. Madhavan recently attended a special premiere screening of the upcoming historical drama ‘Kesari Chapter 2’ alongside lead actor Akshay Kumar. The film, set to release worldwide on 18 April 2025, focuses on India’s freedom movement and particularly the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The screening was attended by several political figures, including Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, various ministers, MPs, MLAs, and other party leaders, diplomats, and friends. In the Instagram post shared by Hardeep S Puri, India’s Union Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas, he described the film as “a powerful, deeply moving and evocative cinematic ode to India’s freedom movement and to the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh.” The Instagram reel shows Madhavan and Akshay Kumar posing with other attendees at what appears to be a special screening event.
The film features Akshay Kumar portraying the role of lawyer Sir C. Sankaran Nair, who fights to expose “the web of deceit and lies to bring out the truth of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre.” The actor emphasized that this historical chapter “waited long to unfold” and carries a “powerfully unifying message” for all Indians.
The Jallianwala Bagh massacre, which occurred on 13 April 1919, in Amritsar, Punjab, was one of the most tragic events in India’s struggle for independence. British troops under the command of Colonel Reginald Dyer fired on a crowd of unarmed Indian civilians who had gathered for a peaceful protest, killing hundreds and wounding many more. The incident became a turning point in India’s freedom movement and galvanized support for independence. The film appears to focus on the legal battle that followed, with Sir C. Sankaran Nair, a prominent Indian lawyer and statesman, fighting to bring the truth about the massacre to light. The movie’s title, ‘Sankaran Vs The Empire,’ as hashtagged in Madhavan’s post, suggests a David-versus-Goliath legal confrontation between Nair and the British Empire.
