Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai recently engaged with 1,000 students aged 15-18 at an Indian International Movement to United Nations (IIMUN) event, sharing his wisdom and philosophy on various aspects of life and career.

The filmmaker took to Instagram to share highlights from the interactive session, describing it as “fun” while outlining the five key points he discussed with India’s youth.

Key Insights From Ghai’s Address

During his talk, Ghai emphasized several life philosophies. He advised students to “Accept all – respect all and do what your soul says,” highlighting the importance of following one’s inner voice while maintaining respect for diversity.

One of his most emphatic statements was about feminism, which he described as “the biggest virtue gifted to this world.” This perspective from the 79-year-old filmmaker shows his progressive stance on gender equality.

Ghai also made a thoughtful distinction between religion and spirituality, describing religion as “a faith” while characterizing spirituality as “discovery of universe.” He celebrated youth as “an energy at top of life,” acknowledging the vim and vigor of his young audience.

On filmmaking, he encouraged students to “Make films to tell Indian stories to the world,” emphasizing the importance of cultural storytelling and India’s cinematic voice on the global stage.

Perhaps most notably, Ghai defined true success as “that which is shared with others,” promoting a collaborative and generous approach to achievement.

IIMUN’s Role Model Series

This appearance was part of IIMUN’s Role Model Series, an initiative designed to bring inspirational figures to young people. According to a recent post by IIMUN, the series “was born from a simple yet profound belief — that today’s youth need more than just influencers and fleeting success stories. They need values to anchor them, vision to inspire them, and voices to guide them.”

The organization described Ghai as “a titan of Indian cinema” and “a mentor, visionary, and true icon” in their promotional material for the event, highlighting his journey from aspiring actor to becoming the creative force behind cinematic milestones like Ram Lakhan, Karma, and Taal.

Ghai’s Ongoing Contributions To Cinema And Education

Ghai continues to nurture new talent through his film institute, Whistling Woods International, which recently marked its 19th anniversary. His production house, Mukta Arts, is backing Amaira, an upcoming Marathi film releasing on May 16, 2025. Featuring Pooja Sawant, Ajinkya Deo, Rajeshwari Sachdev, and Sai Godbole, the film explores themes of friendship—a value Ghai emphasized in his IIMUN talk.

With over five decades in cinema, Ghai remains active both as a mentor and creator, connecting with the next generation through education and storytelling.
